The Earth being round (well, ovoid), it is impossible to travel indefinitely into the wilderness before eventually arriving back at civilisation. Or, to put it another way, the further away you are, the closer you’re getting.
However, there must be points that are the most remote from certain things.
For example, the greatest distance away from any land is Point Nemo. Located in the southern Pacific Ocean, it is 1,670 miles from solid ground in any direction. Get marooned here and you’d better pray that your raft doesn’t spring a leak.
(If Tropic of Blah was set in any actual location, it would probably be here)
To flip this around, the furthest point from the sea anywhere on the planet is located 200 miles north of the city of Urumqi, in the in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region of China. Should you wish a paddle in the ocean, it would only require a walk of 1,645 miles to do so.
By the same account, the most landlocked country is Kyrgyzstan. Which makes the Kyrgyzstan Navy a perfect oxymoronic metaphor.
